Flash On Tap – May 28th-30th

Flash on Tap is approaching!  If you haven’t signed up yet – head on over to http://www.flashontap.com and register now for great pricing!  If you aren’t familier with Flash on Tap – its a conference being held in Boston that is a combination of a beer and Flash.  If you are interested in taking some workshops – check out the 1st day of the conference – featuring a good choice of all day workshops that should be very informative, and mostly a lot of fun.  I am doing a conference with John Grden that day on the basics of Papervision3D.  We will be covering everything from the basics of the coordinate system to increasing your FPS with layers.  If you have ever wanted to get a good ground-up walk-through – this would be the time to get it!

There are going to be some awesome speakers – great company – beer if you like it -  and me!  I’ll also be presenting on Papervision3D – though I haven’t narrowed down my exact topic – I’m thinking something along the lines of extending Papervision – showing the basics of some of the cool things that have been done with the Papervision engine, including JigLib and Flar – along with some cool things you can do with the built in classes.  If anyone has a better class idea – or if there is somethings specific you would really like me to cover – let me know!

Anyways – sign up now – it is going to be a lot of fun!

  1. I was hoping to check out your lecture on papervision but had a few questions. I’ve used papervision quite a few times and have played around with some modifiers like as3mod and such. So i’m fairly familiar with the package. I was hoping to gain a little more insight on how you would suggest getting performance increases in certain situations as well as advanced lighting and shading techniques. One of the guys at the office however said he went to one of your and john’s lectures before and a lot of the time was wasted just getting everyone’s class paths set up, answering very beginner questions, and that you did get into some advanced topics but it was really in the last hour. Do you anticipate this lecture to be similar to that situation? Will you be covering shaders or optimization for complex scenes? Thanks and i hope to run into you in boston.

  2. On one of our first classes we did have some trouble getting people setup with Flex builder. We have certainly learned since then and now everyone simply uses the Flash IDE for coding – as there are no bizarre project errors and such.

As for the topics – it is a class that is general targeted as a more introductory class of Papervision. John teaches the first half covering the very basics, along with some tricks to avoid math, and some optimization techniques. I teach the second half generally going over layers, effects, and shaders. Since this workshop is only a day, it will cover more the general use of the engine for those wanting to get involved, but you could still certainly get some things out of it. Most of these topics have multiple facets and there is plenty of tips and tricks along the way.

Hope that was helpful – if you don’t take the class itself just say hey at the conference itself – should be fun!
